Bio

​I’m Claire van Rooyen, a Registered Nurse (RN, BSN) and International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC). I experienced the honor of witnessing my first birth at age 2, when I was present at my sister’s home birth. Since then, my passion for maternal and infant care has grown along with my experience.

​With over 10 years in the field of birth, post-partum, neonatal and lactation care, I’ve worked with thousands of families. My experience includes 8 years in a high-risk birth center and NICU at UCSF, teaching birth, breastfeeding and infant care classes at Great Expectations in San Francisco, many hours spent supporting new parents as they gain confidence feeding and caring for their children, and helping families solve infant feeding issues from the common to the complex.

I have one child who has taught me so much about breastfeeding, as we worked through a posterior tongue tie, nipple pain, oversupply, and pumping in a busy work environment. Motherhood has been a deeply humbling experience, and being connected to the Bay Area parent community has been a wonderful way to gain understanding of what today’s parents needs and concerns are. I embrace diversity, and consider it a privilege to have served parents from many different cultural backgrounds and communities, including LGBTQ families, adoptive parents, and single mothers by choice. I consider it my responsibility to stay updated on the latest research so that I can provide a holistic, collaborative, and evidence-based approach.
