After the birth of my first son I worked in a Montessori preschool, and found that although I liked my job working with young children, I really loved talking with their mothers about navigating the challenges of new parenthood- especially breastfeeding. I started pursuing training courses that specialized in Breastfeeding Education, and eventually became a La Leche League Leader and IBCLC.
The more that I spoke with new mothers the more I learned that the pregnancy and birth process was tied to so many of the challenges of early motherhood. After the birth of my second son, I realized how having a birth team who supported you and a birth experience that left you feeling empowered could make a major difference in your confidence as a new mother. I searched to find a childbirth education method that would fit the needs and preferences of different women, and in 2015 I became a Lamaze Certified Childbirth Educator and started Village Birth and Motherhood Preparation. After a few of my clients requested that I serve as their doula, I decided to formally train as a birth doula.
I believe that pregnancy, birth, and breastfeeding are amazing, normal and natural and at the same time profoundly life-changing. I also believe that motherhood can look different for different women, but in all cases women should feel empowered to make the best choices for themselves and their babies.
