As a mother of three grown children, Sally recognizes the importance of supporting mothers (and that's ALL mothers) as they navigate the rewarding, yet sometimes frustrating, journey called Motherhood. Her goal as a lactation consultant is to support moms with not just knowledge and assistance with breastfeeding, but to do so with compassion in a non-judgmental manner. Every mother is different, with varying goals and unique challenges, all, of which, writes HER particular story as a mother. Supporting, encouraging and EMPOWERING mothers is Sally's passion.
She actually started "adulting" with a degree in Speech Communications and a minor in Public Relations, believe it or not. It wasn't until the birth of her second child that she realized maternal/neonatal nursing was her calling. Several years later, it was obvious that she had a talent for connecting with mothers and helping them learn about childbirth, how to care for their newborns and, yes, breastfeeding!
She has been helping breastfeeding mothers in the Augusta area since 2004. In 2008 she obtained her certification as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC). In 2015, she led a team of nurses at Doctors Hospital in becoming the area's only Baby-Friendly Hospital. She is a past chairperson of the CSRA Breastfeeding Coalition where she is still an active member. Sally has spoken at the Georgia Perinatal Association's annual conference and, most recently, was featured in Augusta Medical Professionals magazine.
Her passion to extend help across the community led her to start her business (Baby Azur at the time), where she offered hospital-grade breast pump rentals, as well as other breastfeeding supplies. Then, in early 2018, after having moms continually ask "Can you come to my house and help me?", she added private lactation consultations to her list of services. In 2019, the name officially changed to Sally Wood Lactation. (Because what is a baby azur, how do you pronounce it and what does it do?)
Over the years, mothers, physicians and co-workers have given her many nicknames. Some are downright hilarious: Madame of the Mammaries, Lactating Nurse (uh, not anymore) and Boob Whisperer. Then there are the made-up names: Lactationer and Lactrician (huh?). In the end, the one that has stuck is The Breastfeeding Guru, which has a nice ring to it, don't you think?
