Kristen is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist and Certified Lactation Counselor with experience in counseling and educating both children and adults. She holds a Master of Science degree in Nutrition Science from Syracuse University where she also completed her Dietetic Internship and is currently an Adjunct Professor of Nutrition. She is experienced in providing nutrition care for individuals with special health care needs as well as providing group education on a wide range of topics including plant-based nutrition, sports nutrition, mindful eating and childhood nutrition.
In her counseling, Kristen utilizes an individualized lifestyle-based approach, taking into account the various factors that affect nutrition status and food intake. These are different for each person and include health history, lifestyle, taste preferences, weight and diet history. Since there is no one-size-fits-all, Kristen works with her clients to complete a thorough nutrition assessment and collaboratively develop goals to improve overall nutrition, health and well being.
I have experience working for the New York State Newborn Screening Program as well as working with pregnant and postpartum women and infants through my private practice. I have experience working with pregnant women requiring special diets as well as infants and children with special healthcare needs.
I am a mother of 3 and have exclusively breastfed 2 of my children going through all of the ups and downs that the experience brings. I was drawn to becoming a lactation counselor when I found it very difficult, particularly with my first child, to find any resources in the community to help me through my struggles with breastfeeding. I'm thrilled to collaborate with resources such as MotherFigure to provide accessible information and support for women at all stages of pregnancy and postpartum. I have also experienced the loss of a child at full term which has provided me with a depth of understanding for women and families undergoing perinatal and infant loss, high risk pregnancies and pregnancy and motherhood after loss. My third child was required to spend time in the neonatal intensive care unit which offered it's own specific challenges to the postpartum experience and breastfeeding. These experiences have enriched my ability to understand and work with my patients whose experiences range from healthy pregnancies with no complications to those that are far more challenging and stressful.
