After childbirth, my urinary incontinence symptoms started to intensify, so I switched to wearing leak-proof underwear or pads every day. The fact that the problem seemed to be getting worse, however, motivated me to find a better solution, and I tried the Intimina KegelSmart personal trainer.
The KegelSmart trainer is an internal device designed to help women complete Kegel exercises by setting a progressively challenging routine to follow and by keeping you updated on your progress.
On first glance, the hot pink bean-shaped device on a string looks like a big tampon or a small sex toy—especially once you turn it on and it starts vibrating!
The instructions tell you to turn the device on and insert it into your vagina; you have 30 seconds until the program starts—which is plenty of time to get it in place. Keep the looped string outside your body just like a tampon for easy removal after your exercise is completed.
The KegelSmart trainer then emits three quick vibrating pulses letting you know it’s time to start. It was much more comfortable than I thought it would be to insert and use. The soft silicone and ergonomic design didn’t feel at all invasive, which I had been a bit nervous about.
As the device vibrates, you try to hold your pelvic floor muscles up and in until the next alert lets you know it’s time to relax. The exercise is repeated a few times, letting you rest in between sets, and is best performed lying down so you can relax and focus solely on the muscles you are contracting. The entire session only takes a few minutes and is progressive, adapting as you become stronger. It promises results of stronger pelvic floor muscles in 12 weeks.
My favorite thing about the KegelSmart was that it records the strength of your pelvic floor muscles, allowing you to see your progress over time.
I noticed a difference after the first use simply because I felt that I had a greater awareness of exactly which muscles I needed to target when conducting a Kegel.
After a couple of weeks, I felt like I had greater overall control of my leaking, and my muscles already felt slightly tighter. I wasn’t as consistent with the exercise as I could have been, but I plan to continue with the program, as it’s relatively simple, only takes five minutes a session, and is helping me become more aware of my intimate health.
