What is Gluconolactone used for?
Gluconolactone can often be found in skin care creams and serums. Gluconolactone, a polyhydroxy acid (PHA), offers all the skincare benefits of other AHAs but it is gentle to the skin and is thus more suitable for sensitive skin. For example, Gluconolactone was observed to be as effective as benzoyl peroxide in the treatment of acne but to have fewer side effects2. Gluconolactone, being a polyhydroxy acid (PHA), is capable of chelating metals and may also function by scavenging free radicals, thereby protecting skin from some of the damaging effects of UV radiation1.
