The Basics On Caffeic Acid
What is Caffeic Acid?
Organic compound that is classified as a hydroxycinnamic acid and has antioxidant properties.
What are other names for Caffeic Acid?
2-PROPENOIC ACID, 3-(3,4-DIHYDROXYPHENYL)-, 2PROPENOIC ACID, 3(3,4DIHYDROXYPHENYL), 3,4-DIHYDROXYBENZENEACRYLIC ACID, 3,4-DIHYDROXYCINNAMIC ACID, 3-(3,4-DIHYDROXYPHENYL)- 2-PROPENOIC ACID, 3-(3,4-DIHYDROXYPHENYL)-2-PROPENOIC ACID, and CAFFEIC ACID
What is Caffeic Acid used for?
Caffeic Acid is a hydroxycinnamic acid derivative and polyphenol, with potential antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antineoplastic activities. Upon administration, caffeic acid acts as an antioxidant and prevents oxidative stress, thereby preventing DNA damage induced by free radicals. A study using a maximum dose of caffeic acid (l0μg/mL) normalized the UVB induced cellular changes indicating the photoprotective effect of caffeic acid in irradiated lymphocytes5. The results of another study suggested that this caffeic acid could act as a potent chemopreventive agent against skin cancer6. Caffeic acid has been shown to have good penetration capabilities for the epidermis and dermis upon topical application7. Conclusions
