In my early 20s, I was blessed with three very positive home birth experiences with the support of a midwife and doula. I know firsthand how important a doula's presence can be. My doula helped educate me, which took away fear and gave me the courage and strength to embrace the discomfort of birth. Her gentle guidance and my husband's support allowed me to connect to my own intuition, and I was able to experience three beautiful, relaxing, and empowering births! Over the years, living in Canada and the U.S., I have met many women from diverse backgrounds. In conversation, when birth stories would come up, my heart would sympathize with the pain, stress, and fear many moms experienced—and then of course, the all too common medically intervened hospital births (which I know are necessary at times). I recognized how by having a doula present, their birth could have been far more peaceful and possibly one of the most memorable days of their lives!
