As a mother of nine children, I deeply understand and appreciate the beauty of birth, the many needs and challenges of the birthing mother, and the tremendous impact of a birth within the family. I have lived the amazing joys and blessings, as well as the fear, feelings of inadequacy and unpreparedness that are unique to motherhood. As a professional doula, I find my work incredibly satisfying, and I love to support and witness mothers and families as they enter into this new chapter of life.
I delivered my first baby in 1990. As a young mom, I entered into labor with no idea what to expect. This and subsequent birth experiences were less than empowering and somewhat traumatizing. I didn’t have the proper tools, education, or support, and I felt like I didn’t have a voice to express my needs to my care providers. My husband wanted to be supportive, but he didn’t have the tools to do so.
Prior to becoming a doula, I started volunteering with mothers at a local maternity home, helping the residents go to doctor’s appointments and the grocery store, teaching them menu planning and simple cooking techniques, and providing them with valuable life skills. Helping these women transition into motherhood was very fulfilling, but I was distraught to learn that they lacked the support and love that they so deserved and needed during birth. When the opportunity to learn more about doula training was presented to me, I was immediately interested. Becoming a doula has allowed me to serve and support women in a very tangible way, and my goal is to give all women hope that they can be amazing mothers. I find this work so rewarding and necessary that I still regularly volunteer at the local maternity home.
During my doula training, I was absolutely shocked at how much I did not know, despite the fact that I had given birth to nine babies. I learned so much, and I was determined to take this knowledge and pass it on to as many mothers as I could.
Now, as a doula and Gentle Birth educator, I give mothers and their birth partners tangible tools and resources drawn from brain science, birth science, and technology to help them along their journey.
At A Mother’s Perspective, our intention is always to meet you where you are and to give you the tools you need to have a calm, confident, and supported birth.
