Bio

Kathleen is a Registered Nurse and has a Master’s Degree in Perinatal Nursing from U.C. San Francisco. She is also a board certified Lactation Consultant.

She moved to San Luis Obispo, California in 1980 with her young daughter Kate, to work at San Luis Obispo General Hospital. Quickly she became a community resource for breastfeeding mothers. In 1983, she founded the Breastfeeding Warmline, a telephone counseling service and soon after, one of the first breastfeeding clinics in the country. She has assisted literally thousands of nursing mothers over the 33 years she has been in practice.

Kathleen authored The Nursing Mother’s Companion in 1986, which quickly became a best seller. It is now in its sixth edition and has sold over one million copies. She gave birth to her second child, John, and wrote a second book, The Nursing Mother’s Guide to Weaning. Kathleen has also co-authored Nursing Mother, Working Mother with Gale Pryor, Twenty Five Things Every Breastfeeding Mother Should Know and The Nursing Mothers’ Breastfeeding Diary with best-friend, Jan Ellen Brown. The Nursing Mothers’ Companion has also been translated into Spanish.

Kathleen directed the SLO Breastfeeding Clinic for almost twenty-five years until her diagnosis of breast cancer and her retirement from General Hospital, (one of the first “Baby Friendly Hospitals” in the U.S.) in 2004. In 2002, Kathleen opened Simply MaMa, a maternity and nursing boutique in downtown San Luis Obispo. She lives with her husband and son in San Luis Obispo and continues to work with nursing mothers in her store’s “Breastaurant”!
