The days and weeks after your baby is born are beautiful, messy, and hard. From a roller coaster of emotions and soreness to exhaustion and adjustment to a new normal, the postpartum period for new moms is a life-changing experience. We compiled a list of postpartum essentials for new mothers that includes both practical items and little luxuries to soothe pain, help with common postpartum issues, and smooth the transition to motherhood. Be sure to add these items to your postpartum shopping list.
What to expect postpartum + basic postpartum essentials
Whether you gave birth vaginally or by C-section, expect the postpartum healing period to last 6–12 weeks. Carrying and delivering a child into the world is no easy feat, and it’s important to give your body grace and patience as it puts itself back together.
In the days directly following childbirth, a little bleeding is normal, so you’ll want to stock up on maxi pads to help bridge the gap (tampons are a no-no directly postpartum). However, if you’re bleeding heavily, it’s important to contact your doctor to make sure you’re not hemorrhaging.
Soreness normally lasts for three to six weeks after a vaginal birth, which can be made better with acetaminophen and sitz baths. Whether or not you’re breastfeeding, your breasts will likely be sore and painful, as well—ice packs and warm compresses can help, as well as a supportive nursing bra. Your first bowel movement after baby can sometimes be a long time coming, so it’s a good idea to have a stool softener on hand, as well as a water bottle to keep you hydrated.
Postpartum shopping list and registry ideas
- Loose V-necks and leggings will keep you comfortable and free to move in the days, weeks, and months after birth. You’ll also make good use of a pair of slip-free cozy socks and a comfortable robe.
- A peri bottle is the easiest way to stay clean and comfortable “down there” after birth. It’s also a good idea to grab some witch hazel pads, like Tucks, that provide relief from soreness.
- Staying hydrated is paramount to preventing constipation, helping with exhaustion, and generally helping with postpartum healing and recovery. Pick up a water bottle that holds lots of fluid and is machine washable.
- A lack of sleep is inevitable for the first several months (and even years) after baby arrives. Check out our tips on postpartum beauty here.
- Bleeding and general leaking is common and frequent after childbirth, so it’s a good idea to stock up on underwear that’s up for the job.
- Comfortable nursing bras that provide support and padding go a long way in helping with discomfort, breastfeeding, and general recovery, as do thick and soothing gel pads to insert inside your bra. Check out our tips for finding the perfect nursing pads.
- A postpartum chiropractic adjustment, physical therapy visit, or massage can be a great way to start feeling back to normal after childbirth, both physically and mentally.
- The life of a new mom doesn’t leave much time for relaxation, but taking a few moments for yourself when you can is vital to avoid the baby blues, fight against exhaustion, and retain some sense of self. Indulge yourself with a nice bath, a new pair of tennis shoes for walks out in the sun, or even a mug that keeps your coffee hot.
Regardless of the items that you stock up on or the sleep that you may or may not get, there is nothing more important during the postpartum period as your baby and you. Don’t be hard on yourself, and remember that millions of moms and dads have made it through what can seem like an isolating and difficult period. Give yourself time to heal, recover, and nourish the new little life that you just brought into the world. You’re doing great, mama.
