What is Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract? Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract is an extract from the flowers of the Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) plant, otherwise known as the German Chamomile. There are two main varieties of Chamomile, the Roman chamomile (Anthemis Nobilis) and the German Chamomile (Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria)). Compared to Roman chamomile, German chamomile contains a higher concentration of key active ingredients that have shown anti-inflammatory activity in vivo, namely the terpenoids chamazulene and Œ±-bisabolol (also known as levomenol)1. Much of the skincare research on Chamomile has therefore been conducted on German Chamomile. How is Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) flower extract good for my skin? Chamomile Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract has demonstrated a number of beneficial effects for the skin. Anti-inflammatory Œ±-bisabolol is a key anti-inflammatory component found in great abundance in German chamomile where it comprises nearly half of its essential oil1. The anti-inflammatory activity of Chamomile has been the subject of another study2. Wound healing In a study using 5 days of treatment only in the chamomile group, animals treated with chamomile presented significantly faster-wound healing in comparison to those treated with corticosteroids. It was concluded that chamomile in comparison to corticosteroids promotes faster wound healing process3. Photodamage reduction Chamomile extract is thought to diminish photodamage and pruritus1. Natural moisturizer Chamomile is also believed to be a natural moisturiser1. Is Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) flower extract safe to use on my skin? Chamomile Recutita (Matricaria) Flower extract has been rated as a low hazard ingredient in cosmetic formulations and appears to be extremely safe to use without side-effects4. However, there have also been reports of bisabolol, a Chamomile extract ingredient, causing contact dermatitis in some people5. Conclusions Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract is an extract from the flowers of the Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) plant. It is often used in skin care formulations for it’s soothing and anti-inflammatory effects. It has also shown to offer wound healing and natural skin moisturizing benefits to the skin. However, some people are allergic to this extract.
