The Basics On Dicetyl Phosphate

What is Dicetyl Phosphate?

A mix of portions from cetyl alcohol and phosphoric acid that functions as surfactant and emulsifier.

What are other names for Dicetyl Phosphate?

1-HEXADECANOL, HYDROGEN PHOSPHATE, DICETYL PHOSPHATE, DICETYL PHOSPHATE; DIHEXADECYL PHOSPHATE; 1-HEXADECANOL, HYDROGEN PHOSPHATE, DIHEXADECYL ESTER PHOSPHORIC ACID, DIHEXADECYL HYDROGEN PHOSPHATE, HYDROGEN PHOSPHATE 1-HEXADECANOL, and PHOSPHORIC ACID, DIHEXADECYL ESTER

What is Dicetyl Phosphate used for?

Made from a mix of cetyl alcohol and phosphoric acid, Dicetyl Phosphate shares similar properties with other phosphates used in cosmetics and skin care products. It functions as a surfactant and emulsifier. Sodium citrate acts as a buffering agent in many cosmetics products to control their pH level.

Dicetyl Phosphate During Pregnancy

What we know about using Dicetyl Phosphate while pregnant or breastfeeding

Limited information available.

Potassium C9-15 Alkyl Phosphate Potassium C9-15 alkyl phosphate was not embryotoxic, fetotoxic, or teratogenic in rats.18 Groups of 25 gravid female Sprague-Dawley rats were dosed by gavage with 0, 36.1, 180.5, or 361 mg/kg bw/day (active ingredient (a.i.)) potassium C9- 15 alkyl phosphate (36.1% potassium salt) in deionized water on days 6-15 of gestation. The dams were killed on day 20 of gestation. All animals survived until study termination. The most common clinical sign reported was rales. The NOELs for developmental toxicity, embryotoxicity, fetotoxicity, and teratogenicity were 361 mg/kg bw/day (a.i.). The NOEL and NOAEL for maternal toxicity were 36.1 and 361 mg/ kg bw/day (a.i.), respectively. Oleyl Phosphate Oleyl phosphate was not a reproductive toxicant in rats.17 Groups of 12 male and 12 female Wistar rats were dosed once daily by gavage with 0, 100, 300, or 1000 mg/kg bw/day oleyl phosphate in sunflower oil for 14 days prior to mating and throughout mating; the males were dosed until necropsy (41 days total dosing period) and the dams were dosed through the gestation period and up to lactation day 3, 4 or 5 (41 – 46 days total). Administration of oleyl phosphate did not result in toxic effects, and it did have a negative effect on reproductive parameters. Additionally, no effects in neonate development were noted. The NOAEL was 1000 mg/kg bw/day oleyl phosphate for maternal toxicity and reproductive performance in male and female rats, and for development in F1 offspring. Sodium Lauryl Phosphate Groups of 12 male and 12 female Sprague-Dawley rats were dosed by gavage with 0, 250, 500, or 1000 mg/kg bw/day sodium lauryl phosphate in olive oil.16 An additional five males and five females were dosed with 0 or 1000 mg/kg bw/day sodium lauryl sulfate and served as a 14-day recovery group. The males of the main group and the males and females of the recovery groups were dosed 14 days prior to, 14 days during, and 14 days after mating; the females of the main group were dosed from 14 days prior to mating through day 4 of lactation. The test substance had an irritant effect on the stomachs of animals of all dose groups, causing local effects on the forestomach mucosa. No other dose-related toxic, reproductive, or developmental effects were observed. The NOAEL for parental male and female animals and the NOEL for the F1 generation was 1000 mg/kg bw/day.
