The Basics On Propylene Glycol Isostearate
What is Propylene Glycol Isostearate?
A mixture of propylene glycol and isostearic acid.
What are other names for Propylene Glycol Isostearate?
ISOOCTADECANOIC ACID, MONOESTER WITH 1,2-PROPANEDIOL, MONOESTER WITH 1,2-PROPANEDIOL ISOOCTADECANOIC ACID, PROPYLENE GLYCOL ISOSTEARATE, and PROPYLENE GLYCOL MONOISOSTEARATE
What is Propylene Glycol Isostearate used for?
Here are its main functions: Attracts water: Zeichner says at low concentrations, propylene glycol acts like a humectant, which means it binds water and pulls in hydration to the outer skin layer. When used in cosmetic products, it helps give the skin a hydrated, dewy appearance.

What we know about using Propylene Glycol Isostearate while pregnant or breastfeeding
Limited information available.
The oral administration of propylene glycol dicaprylate/dicaprate(0, 100, 300 or 1000 mg/kg/din arachis oil)on days 6-15 of gestation, was not embryotoxicand yieldednoeffects in theSprague-Dawley CD ratdams.25The NOAEL wasconcluded to beto >1000 mg/kg/d.There were no differences innumber ofimplantations, number of live or dead fetuses, sex ratio, fetus body weights, number of litters, or fetus malformationsbetween the treatment and control groups. The dams were killed and necropsied on gestation day 20.
General safety info about Propylene Glycol Isostearate from CIR
The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel reviewed the safetyof propylene glycol esters(PG esters) as used in cosmetics. These ingredients mostly function as skin-conditioning agents-emollient and as surfactants –emulsifying agent. The Panel reviewed relevant animal and human data related to theseingredients. The similar structure, properties, functions and uses of these ingredients enabled grouping them and using the available toxicological data to assess the safetyof the entire group. ThePanel mostly relied on data on the chemical componentsof these ingredients. The Panel concluded that these propylene glycolesters were safe as cosmetic ingredients in the practices of use and concentration described inthis safety assessment.
