The Basics On Tartaric Acid
What is Tartaric Acid?
Tartaric acid is a naturally-occurring crystalline organic acid found in many plants, including grapes and tamarinds.

What is Tartaric Acid used for?
Formulations containing hydroxy acids (HAs) have been used in clinical practice for decades to treat a variety of skin conditions1. AHAs improve skin texture and reduce the signs of aging by promoting cell shedding in the outer layers of the epidermis and by restoring hydration. The mechanism of action is not completely understood. One hypothesis suggests that AHAs reduce the calcium ion concentration in the epidermis and, through chelation, remove the ions from the cell adhesions, which are thereby disrupted, resulting in desquamation2. This is not much research information specifically related to the use of Tartaric acid.
