What is Trehalose used for?
Trehalose is a natural sugar found abundantly in plants and fungi that is used in cosmetics and personal care products as a flavoring agent and moisturizer. It is considered useful because of its rehydrating and water binding properties, as well as being a strong antioxidant. Trehalose, also known as mycose, is a 1-alpha (disaccharide) sugar found extensively but not abundantly in nature. It is thought to be implicated in anhydrobiosis – the ability of plants and animals to withstand prolonged periods of desiccation. Trehalose is thought to form a gel phase as cells dehydrate, which prevents disruption of internal cell organelles by effectively splinting them in position. Rehydration then allows the normal cellular activity to be resumed without the major, generally lethal damage that would normally follow a dehydration/rehydration cycle. Trehalose is considered a low-hazard ingredient for use in skincare product formulations and is not considered to be harmful1.

General safety info about Trehalose from CIR
The Expert Panel assessed the safety of 25 monosaccharides, disaccharides, and related ingredients, and concluded these ingredients are safe as used in cosmetics. Many of these ingredients are common dietary sugars, dietary sugar replacements, or very closely related analogs and salts; seven of the ingredients are listed by the FDA as GRAS food substances. The most commonly reported cosmetic function is as a skin conditioning agent; other commonly-reported functions are use as a humectant or as a flavoring agent. The Panel reviewed the animal and clinical data included in this assessment, acknowledged that the oral safety of many of these ingredients has been well established, and found it appropriate to extrapolate the existing information to conclude on the safety of all the monosaccharides, disaccharides, and related ingredients.
